Another look at Wonder WomanGal Gadot’s Diana Prince was one of the best things about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and many hope her solo film, Wonder Woman, will be the best DC effort yet (admittedly, not a high bar). The June 2, 2017 release follows Diana as she’s introduced to the world outside of Themyscria, home of the Amazons, by Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor. She fights in World War I and deflects plenty of bullets in slow motion from the looks of it. Directed by Patty Jenkins (Monster), the film also stars Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen, David Thewlis, Elena Anaya, Lucy Davis, Ewen Bremner, Saïd Taghmaoui and Danny Huston. |
The LEGO Batman Movie
All bluster, ego and darkness, Will Arnett’s Batman was one of the highlights of 2014‘s The LEGO Movie. With the aptly titled The LEGO Batman Movie, the Caped Crusader gets his own movie in which he learns to rely on a few friends in his battle against The Joker (voiced by Zach Galifianakis). Directed by Chris McKay, this February 10, 2017 release features voice work by Ralph Fiennes as Alfred, Michael Cera as Robin, and Rosario Dawson as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl.
A look at Trainspotting sequel T2
Renton (Ewan McGregor) has returned home (along with a twist on a familiar monologue and Underworld’s “Born Slippy”) to Sick Boy (Johnny Lee Miller), Spud (Ewen Bremner), and Begbie (Robert Carlyle) in the first trailer for T2: Trainspotting 2. Coming to U.S. theaters on March 3, 2017, this sequel to 1996’s Trainspotting is directed by Danny Boyle from a script by John Hodge, loosely based on Irvine Welsh’s sequel novel, Porno.
Life in space
Life follows the six-member crew of the the International Space Station as they are about to make one of the most important discoveries in human history: evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars. Unfortunately for the crew, this new life form is rather unhappy to be discovered. Directed by Daniel Espinosa (Safe House), this May 26, 2017 release stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds, Rebecca Ferguson, Hiroyuki Sanada, Ariyon Bakare, and Olga Dihovichnaya.
Sing along with future best picture nominee La La Land
Coming to theaters December 9th, La La Land is a musical set in Los Angeles starring Emma Stone as an aspiring actress and her Crazy, Stupid, Love and Gangster Squad co-star, Ryan Gosling, as a jazz musician who survives by playing piano in dingy bars. Writer-director Damien Chazelle’s follow-up to his critical hit Whiplash earned excellent reviews when it showed at the fall film festivals. This latest trailer reveals more bits of the movie’s musical numbers.
One more Oscar contender: 20th Century Women
The latest from writer-director Mike Mills (Beginners) follows Dorothea Fields (Annette Bening), a single mother who is raising her son, Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann), in 1979 Santa Barbara. Helping Dorothea are Abbie (Greta Gerwig), a punk artist living in the Fields’ home, and Julie (Elle Fanning), a teenage neighbor Jamie fancies. Good early reviews and awards buzz for Bening make 20th Century Women one to look for when it opens in select theaters December 25th.
Woody Harrelson is Wilson
Based on Daniel Clowes’ graphic novel, Wilson stars Woody Harrelson as a neurotic and (maybe too) honest middle-aged misanthrope who reunites with his estranged wife (Laura Dern) and learns he has a teenage daughter (Isabella Amara) he has never met. This March 3, 2017 release is directed by Craig Johnson (The Skeleton Twins) and features Judy Greer, Margo Martindale, and Cheryl Hines.
Office Christmas Party
The latest from directors Will Speck and Josh Gordon (Blades of Glory) reunites their stars in The Switch, Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman, for a story about a CEO who wants to close her brother’s office. The brother and his CTO throw a gigantic Christmas party with the hope of impressing a client (Courtney B. Vance) and saving their jobs. Coming to theaters December 9th, Office Christmas Party’s strong comedic cast includes T.J. Miller. Kate McKinnon, Olivia Munn, Vanessa Bayer, Randall Park, Sam Richardson, Jamie Chung, Karan Soni, Abbey Lee, Jillian Bell, and Rob Corddry.
xXx: Return of Xander Cage
The Vin Diesel starring xXx was a big hit for Sony in 2002, but it’s follow-up 2005’s xXx: State of the Union, starring Ice Cube, failed to generate the same box office bonanza. As the title indicates, xXx: Return of Xander Cage brings back Diesel’s original character with the hopes that moviegoers will revisit the franchise. Samuel L. Jackson’s Agent Augustus Eugene Gibbons will make his third xXx appearance while D.J. Caruso (I Am Number Four) will follow in the footsteps of directors Rob Cohen and Lee Tamahori. This second trailer for the January 20, 2017 release, also starring Nina Dobrev, Donnie Yen, and Tony Jaa, is even more insane than the first one.
Gifted
Leaving comic book movies behind after The Amazing Spider-Man 2, director Marc Webb ((500) Days of Summer) returns to his indie roots with Gifted. Chris Evans plays a single man struggling to raise his talented young niece (Mckenna Grace). When the seven-year-old’s mathematical abilities come to the attention of her grandmother (Lindsay Duncan), she threatens to separate the two. The April 12, 2017 release also stars Octavia Spencer and Jenny Slate.
The Eyes of My Mother
Nicolas Pesce’s debut feature disturbed many when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Taking place at a secluded farmhouse and following the maturation of a young girl who witnesses a horrifically violent act at a young age, this black-and-white nightmare earned some very good reviews (among some less glowing reactions). The Eyes of My Mother opens in theaters and On Demand December 2nd.
Short takes
Coming to theaters December 21st, Garth Jennings’ Sing imagines a world inhabited by animals who want to enter a singing competition. Early reviews have been good.
In the animated feature Nerdland, two slacker best friends (voiced by Paul Rudd and Patton Oswalt) decide to get famous no matter what the cost. Look for it in theaters for one night only, December 6, before it’s available on VOD January 6, 2017.
Katie Holmes’ feature directorial debut, All We Had, follows the struggles of Rita Carmichael (Holmes) and her 15-year-old daughter Ruthie. Look for it on VOD and in select theaters December 9th.
