There’s a lot to discover in Pokemon Sun and Moon, but it’s also important to avoid running into trouble (don’t make it double).
If you want to start off on the best foot, try to get a balanced team as soon as you can so you can meet any challenge. You can catch Grubbin and Pichu on Melemele Island’s Route 1 for an electric-type Pokemon, Wingull and Slowpoke are your water-types in the Route 1 Hau’oli Outskirts, Growlithe is an early fire-type on Route 2, and you can get the ghost Pokemon Drifloon and Gastly in the Hau’oli Cemetery off Route 2, just to name a few.
It can be really tempting to spend a bunch of your money on clothes or a new haircut, since Pokemon Sun and Moon have a good range of customization options. But we promise, you’ll have tons of disposable income later on — save money for when you know what all your clothing options are and spend that money on Potions and Poke Balls in the time being. (Maybe get yourself one or two nice things as a reward.)
Wonder Trade is a wonderful feature from X and Y that has been brought back in Pokemon Sun and Moon. You send one Pokemon into the void (or the internet, rather), and you get a random Pokemon in return! So don’t be one of those people who only sends out their reject rodents on Wonder Trade. If we all did that, then there’d be no point to Wonder Trade. Spread a little good karma and send a lucky stranger a version exclusive, like Alolan Vulpix! And definitely don’t recycle your Wonder Trade trash back into the system — do the community a service and release those unwanted Pokemon into the wild at your nearest PC.
If you’ve played a Pokemon game before, you’re probably familiar with HMs, moves like Cut and Surf you teach to your Pokemon to help you get around the region. It’s a pain to delete them once a Pokemon knows them, and you often had to dedicate an entire Pokemon in your party to HMs. Well… now you don’t have to! HMs are a thing of the past in Pokemon Sun and Moon (thanks to Poke Ride), so you don’t have to train a jack-of-all-trades Pokemon that’s not good in battle if you don’t want to. Dedicate that spot on your team to a Pokemon you want!
It may seem obvious, but Pokemon Sun and Moon can throw some tough battles your way, and sometimes your Pokemon will be really worn out. Don’t forget to save often in case things go south!
