New releases in theaters for the weekend of November 18–20
|
Nationwide releases ? | The Edge of Seventeen R DRAMA/COMEDY | Trailers | Writer-director Kelly Fremon Craig’s well-reviewed debut feature centers on a high school junior Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld), whose life is thrown into chaos when her best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson) starts dating her older brother Darian (Blake Jenner). Woody Harrelson plays Nadine’s teacher/reluctant counselor, and Kyra Sedgwick is her mother. A glimmer of hope in Nadine’s messy life is provided by the possibility of a friendship with a boy played by Hayden Szeto. | ? | Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them PG-13 FANTASY/ADVENTURE | Trailers | Pictured above. What began as a Harry Potter spin-off/prequel trilogy is now a five-film saga that begins this weekend. Set decades before the boy wizard was born and in a completely different country, J.K. Rowling’s first original screenplay takes place in 1920s New York, where Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) misplaces his magical case of fantastic beasts, causing trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds. David Yates (The Legend of Tarzan), who directed the last four Potter films, returns, and he’s assembled a wonderful cast—Katherine Waterston, Colin Farrell, Alison Sudol, Dan Fogler, Ezra Miller, Samantha Morton, Jon Voight, and Ron Perlman—to go along with the fantastic beasts. | ? | Bleed for This R DRAMA/SPORTS | Trailers | Yet another solid but unspectacular boxing movie, this biopic from director Ben Younger (Boiler Room) is being compared by some critics to the recent Southpaw. Miles Teller stars as boxer Vinny “The Pazmanian Devil” Pazienza who, after a successful start to his career, gets in a near-fatal car accident and suffers a broken neck. Against doctors" orders, he attempts a comeback with the help of trainer Kevin Rooney (Aaron Eckhart). | ? | Billy Lynn"s Long Halftime Walk R DRAMA — Expands nationwide | Trailers | After a disappointing showing at NYFF, director Ang Lee"s adaptation of Ben Fountain"s novel about a young war hero (newcomer Joe Alwyn) flashing back to his tour of duty in Iraq while being honored at an NFL game has seen its Oscar hopes nearly vanish. Lee"s decision to film the drama in 3D 4K resolution at an unheard-of 120-per-second frame rate was part of the problem at the festival (the audience found the visuals hugely distracting), though few theaters are equipped to screen the film in that format. |
Notable limited and/or VOD releases ? | Manchester by the Sea R DRAMA | | Trailers | Just the third film in 16 years for writer-director Kenneth Lonergan (You Can Count On Me, Margaret), Manchester by the Sea earned raves at Sundance earlier this year, remains one of 2016"s best-reviewed films, and appears to be a lock for a best picture nomination. This tale of grief follows Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) as he returns to his hometown following the death of his brother (Kyle Chandler) and finds himself appointed the legal guardian of his nephew (Lucas Hedges). The strong supporting cast includes Michelle Williams, Matthew Broderick, Gretchen Mol, Tate Donovan and Kara Hayward. | ? | The Red Turtle NR ANIMATION | | Trailers | A wordless animated fable about a man marooned on an island, Studio Ghibli’s first international co-production collected excellent reviews at its Cannes debut in May. The film is screening in Los Angeles and New York this week to qualify for awards consideration and will return in more cities on January 20th. | ? | Nocturnal Animals R DRAMA/THRILLER | | Trailers | Writer-director-fashion mogul Tom Ford (A Single Man) won the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival for his first film in seven years, an adaptation of Austin Wright’s novel Tony and Susan that intertwines two separate narrative strands. In one, Susan Morrow (Amy Adams), a Los Angeles art dealer, receives a novel written by her ex-husband (Jake Gyllenhaal) titled Nocturnal Animals. As she reads the novel, Ford dramatizes the action, a violent tale of revenge about a husband and father (also Gyllenhaal) whose wife (Isla Fisher) and daughter (Ellie Bamber) are kidnapped as the family drives across West Texas. As these stories play out, Ford also utilizes flashbacks to reveal Susan and Tony’s past romance. The film will open nationwide on December 9th. | ? | Divines NR FOREIGN/DRAMA — Netflix exclusive | | | This French-language drama about a drug-dealing teen girl earned director Houda Benyamina the Caméra d"Or for best debut feature at this year"s Cannes. |
