Horizon: Zero Dawn"s Next Update Lets Aloy Pose And Make Faces In Photo Mode

Sony announced that next week, Horizon Zero Dawn is receiving an update (Patch 1.20). One of the more interesting tidbits from the patch notes, which you can read in full here, are that you can make Aloy pose and make faces for the camera in photo mode.

Some of these include Aloy forming her hands into the shape of a heart (pictured above) and lounging on her back. Several new facial expressions are being added, as well as three filters, such as a postcard-themed one that displays "Greetings From" on the photo.

Outside of photo mode, other changes are coming too. The HUD is getting some upgrades, such as a blue status bar appearing above Aloy"s health bar whenever she activates her Shield Weaver Armor. The map is also receiving some updates, such as new filters and legends to make travel easier. Spanish subtitles will also be added and a Spanish voiceover pack is becoming available as of next week in the PlayStation Store.

For more on Horizon: Zero Dawn, check out our hub filled with tons of exclusive content from our cover story trip, and read our glowing review.

[Update] Ubisoft Is Not Teasing Something Related To Far Cry 3

Update (05/03/17 at 1:10 p.m.): We"ve heard back from Ubisoft PR, who has clarified to us that this was simply a "throwback post" and not a tease for anything.

Ubisoft France"s Instagram and Facebook account have shared an image that looks strikingly similar to Rook Island, the setting of Far Cry 3. It"s been nearly five years since the game released, though it"s unclear exactly what Ubisoft"s intentions surrounding the tease are.

A caption beside the photo, written in French, translates to: "An island that we never really left. Does that remind you of something?" You can view the image below, or check out the Instagram link at the bottom of this page.

We have reached out to Ubisoft for further comment. The latest installment to the series, Far Cry Primal, came out last year. Read our review here.

Our Take
Considering its cryptic nature, it is difficult to pinpoint what the motive is behind this tease. It could be a promotion coming up to celebrate the game"s fifth anniversary, maybe a remaster, or a new installment in the Far Cry series that returns to the third game"s Rook Island. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

God Of War Cake Contains Sugar, Flour, And Unyielding Rage

I think everyone can agree that cake is good (even if it"s not good for you). Not everyone agrees Kratos is a good guy, but I think most can agree he"s had a rough lot in life. Now these two things are one thing, and I think everyone can agree a Cake-tos is a good thing.

Created by Ade Cal of Delicut Cakes in Cantabria, Spain, this enormous cakes has the God of War standing over the ruins of a statue of Zeus. The cake is incredibly well-sculpted and detailed, down to the Blades of Chaos Kratos wields.

As to why she chose Kratos as a subject for her cake sculpture, Cal states: "Greek mythology has always fascinated me especially the conflicts and wars waged by the Titans and the Gods."

You can find more photos of the cake on Cake Con International"s Facebook page, and more of Delicut"s work on their page.

Federal Court Case Questions Dota"s Real Ownership

Dota began life as Defense of the Ancients, a mod for WarCraft III that became as popular as the game that hosted it (arguably moreso). As a mod, its history of creation is somewhat muddy, as it was cultivated by multiple people over the years, included community feedback, and was eventually the center of a court case between Valve (which bought the rights to the mod from then-caretaker Abdul "IceFrog" Ismail) and Blizzard (the company who owned the game Dota was created within), eventually settled out of court. At that point, it seemed clear the game belonged to Valve (with a little wiggle room for Blizzard to associate the name with its games). Now, a federal court case once again asks: Who owns Dota?

As Ars Technica reports, the case revolves around Dota Legends and Heroes Charge, two mobile games allegedly infringing on Valve"s Dota copyright. The first argument has to do with whether Dota is a collective work (a collection of separate works that have been assembled). Heroes Charge developer uCool argued in court this was the case, since it "took the most popular Dota heroes and arranged them into a new game," (if this were the case, the same could then be said of Heroes Charge). Judge Charles Breyer dismissed this argument. "By that logic," said Breyer, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens would be a collective work because it arranged the most popular Star Wars heroes, settings, and one-liners into a new movie."

The second argument involves Blizzard"s End-User License Agreement for WarCraft III. Though it doesn"t provide Blizzard with the rights to any of the mods created in WarCraft III, it does states players could not use anything they made with the game"s game creation tools for commercial gain. According to Breyer, Ismail"s eventual sale of Dota to Valve "seems as commercial as uses go."

The third argument could have some repercussions, if it goes uCool"s way. On September 23, 2004, Dota"s caretaker at the time, Kyle "Eul" Sommer, posted on the WarCraft forum Warcenter that "from this point forward, Dota is now open source. Whoever wishes to release a version of Dota may without my consent, I just ask for a nod in the credits to your map." Though Breyer asserts this could mean anyone is able to make a version of Dota to sell, he mentions that its vagueness leaves it open to interpretation. For one, that forum post could refer only to other mods, and not commercial products. Second, as a post on a small (albeit public) forum, the post may have been meant only for Sommer"s fellow forum posters.

Breyer has denied uCool summary judgement, which means the case may move on to face a jury, which will have to decide whether Valve has a legitimate claim on Dota. If uCool wins the case, that could potentially open the door for all kinds of Dota clones to enter the market.

Our Take
I"m no lawyer, but this case seems like a real mess. If the EULA argument holds, then neither Valve nor uCool have a right to create commercial products based on Dota. But if the open-source argument holds, they both do. Valve later hired Sommer and bought out his rights to the game, making any current clarifications from him about his forum post questionable. Although the question of Dota"s ownership has mostly settled on Valve in the public eye, there doesn"t seem to be a concrete path for Valve alone to hold the copyright, though a Jury could ultimately decide as much. Considering how murky the entire history behind Dota"s ownership is, I don"t envy the jury.

Dota began life as Defense of the Ancients, a mod for WarCraft III that became as popular as the game that hosted it (arguably moreso). As a mod, its history of creation is somewhat muddy, as it was cultivated by multiple people over the years, included community feedback, and was eventually the center of a court case between Valve (which bought the rights to the mod from then-caretaker Abdul “IceFrog” Ismail) and Blizzard (the company who owned the game Dota was created within), eventually settled out of court. At that point, it seemed clear the game belonged to Valve (with a little wiggle room for Blizzard to associate the name with its games). Now, a federal court case once again asks: Who owns Dota?

As Ars Technica reports, the case revolves around Dota Legends and Heroes Charge, two mobile games allegedly infringing on Valve’s Dota copyright. The first argument has to do with whether Dota is a collective work (a collection of separate works that have been assembled). Heroes Charge developer uCool argued in court this was the case, since it “took the most popular Dota heroes and arranged them into a new game,” (if this were the case, the same could then be said of Heroes Charge). Judge Charles Breyer dismissed this argument. “By that logic,” said Breyer, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens would be a collective work because it arranged the most popular Star Wars heroes, settings, and one-liners into a new movie.”

The second argument involves Blizzard’s End-User License Agreement for WarCraft III. Though it doesn’t provide Blizzard with the rights to any of the mods created in WarCraft III, it does states players could not use anything they made with the game’s game creation tools for commercial gain. According to Breyer, Ismail’s eventual sale of Dota to Valve “seems as commercial as uses go.”

Ubisoft Is Teasing Something Related To Far Cry 3

Latest Boss Keys Videos Revisits The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword"s Cohesive Dungeons

Although we loved The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword back in the day, it hasn"t aged well in the eyes of fans. The between-dungeon segments were monotonous, the story, while interesting, was plodding and often slowed down your progress, and it the gear system it used was more work than fun.

However, Mark Brown highlights the game"s best feature, its dungeons, in his latest Boss Keys video. According to Brown, what makes Skyward Sword"s dungeon"s great is the way they often make you consider the dungeon as a whole rather than a series of rooms with separate puzzles to solve in each one. Of particular note are the dungeons where you can shift between one of the two states for the entire dungeon, and the one in which you can change the room layout at will.

For more Boss Keys, check out our earlier posts on Brown"s series.

505 Games Publishing Remedy"s Next Title

Publisher 505 Games announced it has signed a deal with Remedy Entertainment to publish and promote the studio"s next game. The game, which is referred to as Project 7, is described as "a cinematic third person action game set in a new Remedy-created universe. Featuring an intriguing story and a game structure offering a long-lasting experience, P7 contains the deepest game mechanics yet in a Remedy game."

According to the press release, 505 Games is providing 7.75 million euros to help fund development costs, as well as marketing and publishing services in exchange for 45-percent royalties on net sales. The deal gives 505 Games 20 years of exclusive rights to Project 7.

One of the most interesting aspects of the announcement is that the game is coming to PlayStation 4, in addition to Xbox One and PC. The studio"s last major releases, Quantum Break and Alan Wake, were both Microsoft exclusives. The game is being built on Remedy"s Northlight engine.

Our Take
Looking over the past few years, 505 Games has done a great job of reinventing itself as a company. It"s published games including Abzu, Virginia, and the upcoming Bloodstained from Castlevania veteran Koji Igarashi – a significant jump in quality from past games like Michael Phelps: Push the Limit and Naughty Bear.

Reader Discussion – What Game Would You Like To See Come To PC?

It"s not recent news, but Destiny marks the first time the series comes to PC, complete with Blizzard online integration. Destiny has long been a game many have wanted to have playable on their PC, especially considering how Bungie nails the visual design of the thing and how that could greatly benefit from the beauty of 60 frames per second. But there are still quite a few other titles that need to be on the system.

So what games would like to see come to PC? I"ll go with the obvious pick and go with Red Dead Redemption. I would absolutely love to see the game running on cutting-edge computer, and the modding community would undoubtedly get up to all kinds of untoward business in it. I"m hoping it happens soon so I can revisit it, especially as the sequel draws near.

So what game would like to see come to a computer near you? Hoping Sony signs a deal with someone to bring Bloodborne over? Holding out for a PC version of Bayonetta 2? Let us know in the comments.

This $800 Bloodborne Statue Will Let You Relive A Pleasant Nightmare

Prime 1 has a pretty good track record of making incredibly detailed, expensive figures from popular franchises and other sources, such as the $2,000 Ludens statue. If you"ve marveled at the studio"s work before but thought "Gosh, none of these are Bloodborne-related!" You"re in luck.

Prime 1 and Sideshow Collectibles have partnered up to release a 32-inch statue The Hunter, Bloodborne"s main character. The figure comes with interchangeable  hands that can hold the game"s three starting weapons: The Hunter Axe, Saw Cleaver, and Threaded Cane. The statue stands atop the corpose of a foe in a nondescript area of the game"s Victorian-esque Yharnam location. You can check out a few more shots of the figure below, as well as on the figure"s store page.
